Blu-ray Disc Market Share and Revenue Similar to Last Week

Posted in Market Share on November 15th, 2008 by Dave

hmm081.jpgThere wasn’t much change in the Blu-ray Disc market share or revenue for the week ending November 9th, according to Home Media Magazine.

The market share versus the top 20 DVDs remained at 8% for the week. While revenue slipped roughly 10%, it remained in the double figures, at just under $11M.

Get Smart was the top title for the week, followed by Journey to the Center of the Earth.

The ever popular The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man were followed by Kung Fu Panda, which was in 5th place despite having only one day of sales counting for the week.

Blu-ray Stats Contest - WALL-E 3 Disc Blu-ray Up for Grabs!

Posted in Commentary, Contests, Site News on November 14th, 2008 by Dave

Wall EI am pretty excited about the release of WALL-E on Blu-ray.

While I hve enjoyed all the Pixar releases, this was one where I went into the cinema with pretty high expectations and they were certainly met.

To celebrate the release of the Blu-ray Disc version, I have decided to have my first give away - the prize will be the 3 Disc Edition of WALL-E on Blu-ray Disc, complete untold features and a Digital Copy of the movie.

Contest is open to US residents (sorry international folks) and a valid email address must be used so that I can contact you if you win. Your email address will be kept private of course.

While there is a ’skill question’, the contest will be decided by a random number chosen from Random.org, not judged on the quality of your response.

Ok - so here is the ’skill question’:

Aside from movie title, what is the most important feature to you on Blu-ray Disc, that helps you to choose which disc(s) to buy with your movie budget?

Answer in the comments with a valid email address to enter the contest.

Feel free to make additional comments, as long as the question is answered.

The contest closes midnight PST on Monday November 17th.

If this turns out to be a success, it could be the first of many!

Update: Comments are moderated so don’t fret if it takes a while for you comment to post.

Tropic Thunder on Blu-ray Disc November 18th

Posted in Amazon, BD Live, Studios, US Releases on November 13th, 2008 by Dave

tropic.jpgAnother movie I enjoyed a great deal at the cinema this year was Ben Stiller’s latest comedy Tropic Thunder.

Ben has come a long way since directing Cable Guy.

Tropic Thunder has solid characters and performances, and I bet the writing contribution from Ethan Coen didn’t hurt either.

I don’t know how many times I have seen forum posts here and there that ask for all the titles with 7.1 audio or which titles have Digital Copy.

To be honest I am surprised that they waited this long - Firefly comes out tomorrow and that would have been an ideal tie in.

Blu-ray Market Share Dips for Week Ending November 2nd

Posted in Market Share on November 10th, 2008 by Dave

hmm08.jpgThe top 20 Blu-ray market share versus DVD dipped below 10% for the first time in a month for the week ending November 2nd, according to Home Media Magazine.

For the week that Tinker Bell was released, the market share for Blu-ray was 8%, while the revenue was down but still quite strong at $12.22M for the week.

The relatively low market share can pretty much be attributed to Tinker Bell, which was the top DVD seller but only third in the Bluray chart, beaten by Journey to the Center of the Earth and The Incredible Hulk on the High Definition format.
