Blu-ray Revenue up 50% for the Week Ending March 7th

Posted in Market Share, Studios on March 15th, 2010 by Dave

hmm14.jpgStrong new releases had the Blu-ray market share up a little to 14% and revenue up 50% to $30.62M for the week ending March 7th, according to Home Media Magazine.

The top seller was easily the big budget disaster epic 2012 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

2012.jpgNew releases took second and third places also, with Where the Wild Things Are from Warner Home Video and Ponyo from Disney and Studio Ghibli.

The top 5 was rounded out by Oscar winner The Hurt Locker from Summit and X-Men Origins: Wolverine from Fox Hone Entertainment.

Law Abiding Citizen from Anchor Bay is still doing well in 6th position.

On the per title market share side, 2012 did extremely well for Blu-ray with 41% market share on Blu-ray Disc in its first week.

Where the Wild Things Are also had strong sales with 28% market share while Ponyo did even better with 34% Blu-ray market share.

The Hurt Locker was also in the same range with 28% of its sales on Blu-ray Disc.

iceagedawnofthedinosaurs.jpgNew DVD release Curious George 2: Follow that Monkey from Universal pushed things in the other direction with no Blu-ray Disc version available.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs from Fox was the big Blu-ray winner for the week though, with 60% market share on Blu-ray Disc, no doubt due to promotional pricing.

Blu-ray Market Share Back to 13% for the End of February

Posted in Market Share, Studios on March 5th, 2010 by Dave

hmm13.jpgThe Blu-ray market share was back up to 13% on a revenue of $20.96M for the week ending February 28th, according to Home Media Magazine.

While it was good to see double figure market share and revenue over $20M, it was a bit of a strange week, perhaps with significant sales promotions for certain titles.

Law Abiding Citizen from Anchor Bay was again in 1st place, ahead of Pixar’s Up in 2nd place - and hint that promotional pricing was in play.

justiceleaguecrisisontwoearths.jpgThe best selling new title was Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths from Warner in 3rd place, ahead of Star Trek from Paramount and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian from Fox in 4th and 5th.

Other new titles didn’t fare quite as well, with The Informant! from Warner in 10th place,  Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant from Universal in 12th place, and The Box from Warner down in 15th position.

Looking at per title market share, we see almost the exact opposite of last week.

Top selling Law Abiding Citizen had a strong 41% Blu-ray Disc market share while Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths also performed well with 29% share.

New Warner titles The Informant! and The Box sold19% and 18% on Blu-ray Disc respectively, while Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant had 21% share.

startrek.jpgStrong signs of promotional pricing were evident with a number of titles outselling their DVD counterparts.

Up had 55% market share, Star Trek an amazing 77% market share, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian had 68% and Inglourious Basterds from Universal squeaked in with 52% Blu-ray share.

I was a little surprised that Everybody’s Fine from Disney/Miramax didn’t get a Blu-ray Disc release, so no market share for that title at all.

Blu-ray Market Share Dips Below 10% for First Time in 2010

Posted in Market Share, Studios, US Releases on February 19th, 2010 by Dave

hmm09.jpgThe Blu-ray market share was only 9% for the week ending February 14th according to Home Media Magazine - the first time it has been single figures this year.

On the other hand, the revenue was a healthy $20.15M for the week.

Top seller for the week was Couples Retreat from Universal, ahead of Zombieland from Sony Pictures in 2nd place.

couplesretreat.jpgNew release The Time Traveler’s Wife from Warner took 3rd place ahead of strong sellers Michael Jackson’s This Is It from Sony Pictures and Star Trek from Paramount.

New releases A Serious Man from Universal, The Stepfather from Sony and Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic from Anchor Bay placed 12th, 13th and 15th place respectively.

Looking at per title market share, the top sellers were a little lower this week, with Couples Retreat at 19% and The Time Traveler’s Wife at 10% Blu-ray Disc market share, while Zombieland had a healthier 27%.

The Hangover from Warner was also lower than previous weeks with ‘only’ 20% Blu-ray Disc market share.

startrek.jpgTop performers were Inglourious Basterds from Universal with 45% market share, and Star Trek with an awesome 56%.

Looking at other new releases, The Stepfather took only 13%, while A Serious Man had 27%  and Dante’s Inferno: An Animated Epic 34% Blu-ray market share.

Two Top 20 DVD releases that had an adverse effect on the overall market share were The Penguins of Madagascar: Operation DVD Premiere and Mickey Mouse Clubhouse: Minnie’s Bow-tique, which had no Blu-ray release at all.

Blu-ray Market Share Dips While Revenues Remain Strong

Posted in Market Share, Studios, US Releases on February 8th, 2010 by Dave

hmm11.jpgThe Blu-ray market share dipped slightly to 11% while the revenue remained a solid $21.16M for the week ending January 31st, according to Home Media Magazine.

Michael Jackson’s This Is It from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was easily the best selling title, taking the top position in the sales chart.

michaeljacksonsthisisit.jpgDisney’s Surrogates had to settle for 2nd place, ahead of the latest in the franchise Saw VI from Lionsgate 3rd position.

The top six was filled out by strong performers from 2009 - The Hangover from Warner, Star Trek from Paramount and Up from Disney respectively.

Summit’s The Hurt Locker took a bit of a tumble to end up in 7th place while Gamer from Lionsgate was in 8th position.

A surprise entry to the top 10 saw WWII in HD from A&E and the History channel take 9th place for the week, ahead of WWII movie Inglourious Basterds from Universal in 10th.

Drew Barrymore’s Whip It from Fox was the last new release to make the top 20 in 11th position on the chart.

sawvi.jpgIt is easy to see why the market share was down for the week, with Michael Jackson’s This Is It taking ‘only’ 21% and Saw VI only 20% market share on Blu-ray Disc.

This in contrast to market shares of 28% for Surrogates and 27% for The Hangover.

The Hurt Locker and District 9 are also doing solid Blu-ray business with 33% Blu-ray Disc market share each.

Top prize though goes to Star Trek with 61% market share for the week, a little ahead of WWII in HD with 58%, not so surprising for a title with a leaning towards HiDef.

Other titles selling more than a third of their units on Blu-ray Disc include Up , Inglourious Basterds and Public Enemies.

wwiiinhd.jpgI was expecting Whip It to have somewhat lower than its 13% market share, while I Can Do Bad All By Myself was again a poor performer in HiDef, and with 4% market share was the one of only two Top 20 DVD titles that took less than 10% market share for Blu-ray.

All said and done, with only a quarter of the top 20 DVD titles for the week having less than 20% market share on Blu-ray, I think the format is continuing to grow.

Blu-ray Sales Set New Records Through Holiday Season

Posted in Market Share, Studios on January 13th, 2010 by Dave

hmm15.jpgThe Blu-ray market share was 15% and the revenue was a solid $37.72M for the week ending January 3rd, according to Home Media Magazine.

Recently released data also shows that the revenue for the week ending December 20th topped $86M, setting a new record week for Blu-ray Disc.

hangover.jpgThe Hangover from Warner continues to have very strong sales, taking 1st place ahead of the new District 9 release from Sony Pictures in 2nd.

The top five was rounded out by Paranormal Activity from Paramount, Up from Disney and 9 from Universal in 5th place.

Other recent releases still selling well include Inglourious Basterds from Universal in 6th position and Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from Warner in 7th place.

Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies and Star Trek rounded out the top 10.

I was a little surprised to see Family Guy Presents: Something Something Something Dark Side in the chart at 11th place, beating out fellow Fox release Jennifer’s Body in 12th.

district9.jpgLooking at the per title Market Share, I am seeing a number of blockbuster titles selling very well on Blu-ray for the week.

Public Enemies sold 46% on Blu-ray Disc, while Star Trek and District 9 sold 45% and Terminator Salvation 44% on Blu-ray Disc.

In the 30% market share range I see 9 and Inglourious Basterds, while strong titles with 20% market share include top seller The Hangover, Paranormal Activity, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Jennifer’s Body and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian.

Even traditionally weaker genres are seeing improvement with romantic comedy (500) Days of Summer taking 12% and family movie G-Force selling 14% of its units on Blu-ray Disc.

While it still has a long road ahead, with four high profile titles getting close to selling half of their units on Blu-ray Disc, I find it increasingly hard to believe that Blu-ray could be considered a niche product!

Another Record Week for Blu-ray Revenue - Almost $80M in One Week!

Posted in Market Share on December 18th, 2009 by Dave

hmm14.jpgThe Blu-ray market share for the week ending December 13th was 14%, for a new record Blu-ray Disc revenue - just a fraction short of $80M - according to Home Media Magazine.

Certainly $79.86M revenue is not to be sniffed at, up 70% over last year for the same week.

harrypotterandthehalfbloodprince.jpgHarry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from Warner easily took 1st place in the chart, selling almost four times the 2nd placed Public Enemies from Universal.

Terminator Salvation from Warner, Star Trek from Paramount and Up from Disney rounded out the top 5.

With a strong performance for a television show, Lost: The Complete Fifth Season from ABC/Disney took 8th place, while the Julia Childs movie Julie & Julia from Sony Pictures settled for 10th position.

Interestingly the bundled Lost: The Complete Seasons 1-5 also featured in the top 20 in 18th place.

Over to market share per title, the top seller Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince had an impressive 24% market share for Blu-ray Disc.

Public Enemies did even better with 30% on Blu-ray, while Julie & Julia was on the lower side with 6% on Blu-ray Disc.

Star Trek from Paramount continues to do well on Blu-ray, also with 30% market share, while Terminator Salvation had a very strong 43% on Blu-ray Disc.

lostthecompletefifthseason.jpgIn the more typical range, Lost: The Complete Fifth Season from Disney had a 16% market share on Blu-ray while recent releases Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen sold 18% and Angels & Demons  sold 25% on the format.

All in all I think we have a stronger performance for the year’s big titles, though the smaller movies still show that Blu-ray has a long way to go for ‘universal acceptance’.

Blu-ray Rides Pixar Balloons to a $41 Million Revenue Week

Posted in Market Share, News on November 23rd, 2009 by Dave

hmm17.jpgThe week ending November 15th was good for Blu-ray, with a 17% market share versus DVD and a revenue of $41.03M for the week, according to Home Media Magazine.

Disney had a superb week with their Pixar releases, with the Up Blu-ray release taking the top spot, selling five times as many copies as the second placed Monsters, Inc.

up.jpgThe top five was rounded out by recent releases G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra from Paramount, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen from DreamWorks and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, again from Disney.

New releases The Ugly Truth from Sony and Heat from Warner took 6th and 7th place respectively, while recent releases The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 from Sony and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs from Fox took 8th and 9th position.

Other new releases to make the top 20 included the super extended Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut from Warner in 15th place and the epic Godzilla from Sony Pictures in 17th place.

Surprisingly, the classic It’s a Wonderful Life from Paramount remained in the chart, taking 18th place.

watchmentheultimatecut.jpgOver to marker share per title, we now have a new release title that sold more copies on Blu-ray than DVD.

The new Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut release had 54% market share for the week, making it the first title released simultaneously with the DVD to outsell the older technology.

To be honest I am a little surprised that it happened so soon, but it is great to see.

Up was also a strong player for Blu-ray with 24% on Blu-ray, while The Ugly Truth was at the other end of the spectrum with only 6% of its sales on Blu-ray Disc, putting it on a par with Aliens In The Attic.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra continues to do well on Blu-ray with 25% market share, as does Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with 24%.

It is certainly encouraging to see a lot of the big summer releases selling a quarter of their volumes on Blu-ray Disc.

Disney’s Upcoming 2009 Blu-ray Releases Revealed

Posted in Studios, US Releases on January 7th, 2009 by Dave

pinocchio.jpgI see an interesting article over at Yahoo about Disney’s plans to add DVD copies and/or Digital Copies of movies along with the Blu-ray Disc release.

Perhaps of more interest is the revelation of many of Disney’s upcoming release plans for 2009.

Looks like we can expect Walt Disney’s animated classic Pinocchio: 70th Anniversary Platinum Edition in March and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs Platinum Edition in October.

From Pixar we can expect Monsters Inc. and A Bugs Life.

Other titles to expect include Microcosmos, Rounders 10th Anniversary Edition, Lost: The Complete First and Second Seasons, Sin City, Sling Blade, The Greatest Game Ever Played, Pulp Fiction Special Edition and Good Will Hunting Special Edition.

I must say that I am really looking forward to quite a number of these releases!
