New Twitter Feature for Blu-ray Bargains and Facebook Page

Posted in Amazon Bargains, Blu-ray Stats Features on November 4th, 2010 by Dave

bigpie.pngSomething I have noticed recently is that the Blu-ray bargains at Amazon come and go rapidly and with my busy schedule I am finding it harder to highlight bargains in a timely fashion.

Since the site can somewhat automagically track things for me, I have added a feature where every hour on the hour the site will Tweet a new Amazon bargain.

This tweet will go out on our Twitter Feed here.

I don’t want to be spammy so let me know if you think this is too often – or let me know if you would prefer to see more!

All in all I am hoping that this will be a useful feature and make the site more useful as a whole.

Speaking of Social Networking, we also have updates going out on Facebook now – avid Facebook users can find our page here.

The Giant Blu-ray Stats Page Gets Pagination

Posted in Site News on October 24th, 2010 by Dave

studio3dpie.jpgSomething that I have been meaning to do for quite some time is to add pagination to the Statistics Page.

While I wanted to wait until the new database version was online, today I felt that it was just too overdue and so when you go to the Stats Page now you will see the new pagination, where you will only see 50 entries, though the stats at the bottom still cover the complete range of your filter selection.

You will also see new links at the bottom which allows you to skip to the next page or the first or last page of the filter selection.

Clicking on one of these links will show the ‘controls’ in the link, and if you want you can change them directly there.

Changing the pSize variable will change the number of entries shown on the page, and any tweaking of these should be carried over when you filter further.

In any case, have fun with the new page and feel free to comment here if you see anything bad or have anything to say about the new format.

If all goes well I will add this feature to the other statistics pages as well.

Happy Earth Day Blu-ray Stats Readers!

Posted in Blu-ray Stats Features, Commentary on April 22nd, 2010 by Dave

avatar.jpgHi all – hope you had a fun Earth Day. I hope some celebrated by getting a copy of Avatar on Blu-ray – only  $19.99 at Amazon!

Mine was pretty busy but I did get to ride share, which is a little out of the ordinary for me (I usually take a train but that was not possible today).

I also had the pleasure of having lunch with one of the Blu-ray Stats readers over lunch – I am always up for great Sushi and it was a pleasure to meet one of our most active users!

Then tonight it was great to see the San Jose Sharks take it to Colorado with a 5 goal shut out game! (My commiserations to readers in Colorado)

Things are pretty busy for my day job and with a lot of weekends out of town and a ski week in Canada (I live a rough life!) it has been hard to keep things moving forward here at the site.

My wife notes that with all the time I work on the site, I wouldn’t even make minimum hourly wage off it, but none the less I enjoy it – call it a labour of love.

In any case, now that ski season is over I will hopefully get more time to dedicate to the site infrastructure and will slowly port all the functionality over to a new version of the database (version 4!).

These enhancements should allow for much better representation of multi program titles, box sets and foreign titles – but there is a lot of work to do just to get all of the current titles into the new format.

So if it looks like I am getting behind on adding new titles, in some cases I am just waiting to put them in the new database since the old one has trouble representing some of this data.

Also on the plus side, I see that the forum now has over 500 members! I imagine most are simply tracking their collections with MyBlu-rayStats, but none the less it is great to see that growing.

You can always use the forum to let me know what you think and ask for new features, though keep in mind that there is a lot going on behind the scenes already right now.

Well I have rambled long enough – hope everyone had a great day!

Busy Working on a New Blu-ray Database Version

Posted in Blu-ray Stats Features, Commentary on March 19th, 2010 by Dave

logo-mysql.pngSorry folks that I have not had much to say lately.

I had this mad idea that I needed to upgrade the database significantly and have done a lot of reading about relational databases and I think it is fair to say that I am in MySQL Hell right about now.

The reality is that there is a lot of work to do both in creating the new database format as well as an infrastructure to support it and display the contents, and then to transfer all of the data!

Sadly this means that it will probably be quite a few weeks or more before the new database is ready for use, but when it is, it promises more search options and deeper information, especially for multiple disc and version titles.

It has been a long time coming, but really I think it has all reached the point where it has to be done.

This will likely mean less posts here though I will try to at least keep all of the current releases current as they street.

Hopefully this will result in a more functional database system, and with any luck it will also be faster and have many more search terms and options.

Feel free to comment below if there is anything you think should be included that is not already, since now is the best time for me to add new database fields, etc.

Happy Holidays from Blu-ray Stats.com

Posted in Commentary on December 26th, 2009 by Dave

Hi folks. Hope you are all enjoying your holidays – I am having a nice relaxing time out of town – hence the lack of activity on the blog.

2009 was a busy year for me and no doubt the down economy has touched many – while income for the site from purchase commissions is down, I do want to thank all the folks that use the Amazon, Best Buy and other links when making their purchases.

While I don’t run the site purely for financial gain, in a year like this every bit helps and it keeps me encouraged to maintain the database and the site, when there are so many other things I could spend time on.

Over at the forum I see we have over 400 members now – no doubt most signing up for the MyBlu-rayStats feature – though there has been a little discussion from time to time too.

In any case, all the best, hope 2009 was not too rough on you and best wishes as we move in to 2010…!

Some Small Code Changes on Blu-ray Stats Page

Posted in Blu-ray Stats Features, Site Features on November 17th, 2009 by Dave

I just wanted to let folks know that there is a new revision of code for the stats page that is purely to make it easier to make new pages in the future.

My plan is to add some new charts that may be fun to check out for movies you might like.

If I did my job right, you should not see any difference from the old version of the page.

If you see any strange happenings, please let me know

Summit Blu-ray Titles Added to Universal Total in Database

Posted in Blu-ray Stats Features on October 23rd, 2009 by Dave

twilight.jpgThis is just a heads up for anyone keeping track.

Since Universal distributes Summit titles, much like Pararmount does for DreamWorks, I have attributed the Summit titles to the Universal total instead of just ‘Other’.

This will have caused the pie charts to jump a little, but be assured that this was expected and is not an error.

Sorry to the 2 people that care! :)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Blu-ray Half Price at Amazon

Posted in Amazon Bargains, Blu-ray Stats Features on October 19th, 2009 by Dave

transformersrevengeofthefallen.jpgSome of you may have noticed a new feature block on the home page for the site.

The new Recent Amazon Bargains and Deals widget lists the most recent titles listed for 50% off or more.

And to prove it’s worth I see right now that Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen has been dropped to half retail price, selling for only $19.99.

So if you are interested in the most recent bargains available at Amazon, check the home page for a regularly updated list.

A Few Blu-ray Stats Behind the Scenes Activities

Posted in Commentary, Site News on September 7th, 2009 by Dave

bluraystats.jpgToday is Labor Day in the United States, and as with other public holidays, I am going to take the opportunity to talk about some behind the scenes and personal activities.

September is a very busy month for me personally, with a short film project in progress and a two week vacation in Europe at the end of the month.

I intend to keep up the basic updates while I am travelling, but there will probably be less here in the News Log during that time.

On the website side of things I am working on two new features for the database.

Firstly I am enabling international entries, which will allow the same kind of details that we have for the US database to be stored for titles of interest from other countries.

Secondly I am aiming to enable extensions for titles with more than one disc or one movie included, to allow for complete information for box sets.

These features are in progress and will eventually go live on the site.

Hope all you US residents had a great three day weekend!
