When Hellboy II: The Golden Army streets on November 11th from Universal, Blu-ray Disc enthusiasts will have two versions to choose from.
The primary version will be a 2 Disc Edition that includes Digital Copy and BD Live capability. This edition will be $39.98 retail, or pre-order at Amazon for only $29.95.
More animation is coming to Blu-ray Disc.
Kung Fu Panda will be released by Paramount on November 11th, 2008.
This DreamWorks animated comedy pulled in over $200M in US box office, and no doubt will look great on Blu-ray Disc.
A set of semi interesting releases are slated for today.
The must have item for me is the Lions Gate release The Doors ($19.95 at Amazon). It has been a while since I have seen this one and look forward to a nice HD picture and lossless 7.1 audio.
Sony Pictures is releasing Starship Troopers on August 5th, 2008. Retail will be $28.95, the Amazon price - only $19.95.
Budget line distributor Platinum Disc Corporation is planning to release The Woods Have Eyes on October 21st, 2008. The retail price will be $14.99, pre-order at Amazon for $9.95.
Universal Studios has Leatherheads coming to Blu-ray on September 23rd, 2008. Retail will be $39.98, the Amazon price - only $27.95.
As previously noted, I quite enjoyed this movie in the cinema.
There were quite a number of interesting releases on Blu-ray Disc today.
The miniseries Broken Trail was released by Sony at the catalog title pricing, complete with Dolby TrueHD on a BD50 disc. Sony also released The Other Boleyn Girl, again on a BD50 with True HD audio. Lastly from Sony - The Professionals was released with a PCM soundtrack, this time on a BD25 disc.
Image Entertainment released Heart: Alive in Seattle with DTS-HD Master Audio.
Fox released Jumper with DTS Master Audio and a Bonus View Picture in Picture feature.
Warner released Natural Born Killers in the special book packaging on a BD50 Disc with Dolby TrueHD audio - sadly this one carries the premium price tag.
Warner also released The Bucket List - this one didn’t fare so well with only a BD25 disc and Dolby Digital audio - of course the premium pricing for a new release remains. This movie made almost $100M at the box office and stars Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman - you would think it deserves better than Dolby Digital audio. Warner needs to know that this level of support is not acceptable!
Magnolia released The Signal - not much info on this one other than it is coded for all regions.
Lions Gate released Witless Protection with 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio on a BD50 disc - sounds like a winning presentation (Warner, pay attention) though perhaps this disc has limited appeal to anyone other than Larry the Cable Guy fans - with a 1.7 at IMDb and 0% at Rotten Tomatoes, it sounds a little dire.
Mantra has released Girls Gone Wild: Hottest Moments Ever, adding to their seemingly never ending supply for this series.
Lastly, Amazon has added a special Blu-ray 12-pack , perhaps to make it easier for that instant collection if you are just starting out. It seems like a pretty decent selection of titles, though it wouldn’t take many that you don’t want to make it a false economy…
Amazon has listed a new Dirty Dancing Collectors Edition, apparently to be released by Lions Gate on August 12th, 2008. This title was already released just over a year ago, so it is not out of the question that a new version could be coming. The retail price is $19.98, you can pre-order it at Amazon for $13.95.
Platinum Disc has announced some pairings of their movies for release on July 29th, 2008. Firstly Salvage & Mortuary is set at $28.98 retail, pre-order at Amazon for $25.50. Artie Lange’s Beer League & The Big White will also be at Amazon for $25.50.
The girls just keep on going wild - Girls Gone Wild: The Perfect Pair will be released by Mantra Films on August 12th, 2008. The retail price will be $24.95, pre-order at Amazon for $16.95.
It is an epic day for TV shows on Blu-ray. No less than three TV Box Sets have been listed.
Firefly has been listed with no release date, only a retail price of $89.98 and an Amazon price of only $62.95.
Grey’s Anatomy: The Complete Fourth Season will be released by Touchstone / Disney on September 9th, 2008. The retail price will be $96.99, pre-order at Amazon for $66.95.
Touchstone / Disney also has the release Lost: The Complete Fourth Season for December 9th, 2008. Retail has also been set at $96.99, and again bargain hunters will find it at Amazon for only $66.95
The Season 4 discs have relatively few episodes due to the writer’s strike but word is that they will pack them with extras to make up for the short fall.
One I have been waiting for - Warner Home Video is planning to release Dark City Director’s Cut on July 29th, 2008. Retail will be $28.99, the Amazon price - only $19.95.
Earth: The Biography has been freshly listed by BBC Video, scheduled for a July 22nd, 2008 release. Retail has been set at $39.99, you will find it at Amazon for only $27.95.
MGM has announced their second war themed title, A Bridge Too Far for Blu-ray on June 3th, 2008. Retail will be $39.98, only $27.95 at Amazon.
Lastly there seems to be no end of the Girls Gone Wild releases. Girls Gone Wild: Sex in Sin City will be released by Mantra Films on July 8th, 2008. The retail price is $24.95, you can pre-order it at Amazon for only $16.95.

One of my all time favourite movies, the Mike Meyers movie So I Married an Axe Murderer will be released by Sony June 17th, 2008. The retail price will be $28.95, pre-order at Amazon for $19.95.

The ‘direct to video’ sequel Stargate: Continuum has a July 29, 2008 release. This 20th Century Fox carries their typical $39.98 retail pricing, at Amazon for $27.95.
Video Treasures are planning to release Sex And The Death 101 on July 1st, 2008. This title is a comedy/drama features Winona Ryder and Simon Baker. The retail will be $34.98, preorder at Amazon for $23.95.
Lastly, Mantra has no end of Girls Going Wild in HD - Girls Gone Wild: Hottest Moments Ever is scheduled for June 10th release. Retail is set at $24.95, only $16.95 at Amazon.
