Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray Discounted Almost 60%

Posted in Amazon Bargains on June 2nd, 2010 by Dave

savingprivateryan.jpgToday’s big bargain at Amazon is the recently released Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series release from DreamWorks.

This movie features a great cast including Tom Hanks, and was directed by Steven Spielberg.

Right now this title is discounted to $16.49 - a 59% saving off the $39.99 retail price.

Certainly a great deal for such a popular release so soon after hitting the shelves!

Another great deal is The Godfather - The Coppola Restoration Giftset with The Godfather, The Godfather Part II and The Godfather Part III for only $45.49, saving 64%!

Little Change in Blu-ray Market for the Week Ending May 9th

Posted in Market Share, Studios on May 14th, 2010 by Dave

hmm12.jpgThe Blu-ray market share was 12% and the revenue was $21.5M for the week ending May 9th, according to Home Media Magazine.

Avatar from Fox remains at the top of the chart, selling over four times more than the second placed Saving Private Ryan from Paramount/DreamWorks.

avatar.jpgNew release Tooth Fairy from Fox took 3rd place ahead of Iron Man from Paramount and It’s Complicated from Universal Studios.

The Dark Knight from Warner has been bouyed by sale pricing to 6th place, ahead  of Sherlock Holmes, also from Warner  Home Video.

New release Nine from Sony Pictures also made the top 10 in 9th place while another new release, Leap Year from Universal, had to settle for 11th.

Classic release Doctor Zhivago from Warner took 14th place, ahead of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus from Sony Pictures.

Looking at per title market share, Avatar continues to do well for Blu-ray with a 40% market share.

Other recent titles had more typical market shares like Tooth Fairy with 12%, Leap Year with 11% and It’s Complicated with 10%.

savingprivateryan.jpgNine did somewhat better with 18% Blu-ray Disc market share.

Iron Man from Paramount had a great week with a Blu-ray market share of 36%, though the top prize goes to Saving Private Ryan, with the new Blu-ray release taking 96% for Blu-ray Disc.

The Dark Knight has also been propelled by promotional pricing up to a very strong 68% Blu-ray market share.

Saving Private Ryan Blu-ray Disc Recalled

Posted in US Releases on May 13th, 2010 by Dave

savingprivateryan.jpgParamount Home Entertainment has announced that it is recalling the Blu-ray edition of Saving Private Ryan for North America, the United Kingdom and the Benelux countries.

The recall is due to an audio synch error that occurred during the authoring process that was not detected before replication.

Technicolor has set up toll-free numbers for consumers who have already purchased the Saving Private Ryan Sapphire Series Blu-ray.

US and Canada can call 888-370-8621 and for the UK call 08000-852-613.

You can also return the Blu-ray to the store where it was purchased to receive a replacement.

Technicolor expects to have replacement discs available at retail no later than Tuesday, May 18.

Avatar Dominates Record Market Share Week for Blu-ray Disc

Posted in Market Share on May 3rd, 2010 by Dave

hmm22.jpgThe Blu-ray market share was a record 22% on a $66.57M revenue for the week ending April 25th, according to Home Media Magazine.

Obviously a lot of that revenue is due to the sales of Avatar from Fox Home Entertainment, but the impressive thing is just how much.

Second placed Crazy Heart, also from Fox, sold only one copy for every 50 copies of Avatar that sold.

avatar.jpgThe 4th placed new release The Lovely Bones from Paramount/DreamWorks sold only one copy for every 100 Avatar copies sold.

It is clear that Avatar easily sold more copies than the rest of the top 20 combined by quite a margin.

Sherlock Holmes from Warner took third place while Toy Story from Disney continues to sell well, taking 5th position.

New catalog release Minority Report from Paramount/DreamWorks was tied for 7th place with Toy Story 2, while The Young Victoria from Sony Pictures came in 11th.

As previously noted the top selling Avatar also had an amazing 49% market share on Blu-ray Disc, while other new releases Crazy Heart and The Lovely Bones had more typical 16-17% market share.

Sherlock Holmes continues to do well with 31% Blu-ray Disc market share, though the big winner for the week is the catalog release for Minority Report with 72% of its sales on Blu-ray Disc.

minorityreport.jpgPromotional considerations like pushed another pair of titles to sell more Blu-ray than DVDs - X-Men Origins: Wolverine from Fox and Dark Knight from Warner both edged DVD with 51% Blu-ray market share.

Period piece The Young Victoria sold 15% of its copies on Blu-ray Disc, which is actually a pretty good performance considering the genre.
