The Dark Knight BD Live Chat Session Image Gallery is Available

Posted in BD Live, Technology on December 20th, 2008 by Dave

tdk.jpgI know a number of us participated in the Warner BD Live Chat for The Dark Knight on Thursday evening, where director Chris Nolan held a live chat during a Community Screening of The Dark Knight.

I also know a lot of people were not able to participate.

So for some to relive and some to enjoy, I have created a gallery of 160 images from the session.

Each image is available in full 1920×1080 resolution if you want to click through, though the images are displayed at half resolution to make it easier on those with smaller monitors.

With such a large number of images, I just found it easier to create a gallery page application from scratch, rather than upload them all to the blog.

In any case, I hope you enjoy this memento of the event, and I hope that the studios arrange more such events.

We know that at least Warner and Universal are capable!

The Dark Knight Leads Blu-ray to Record Revenues and Market Share

Posted in Market Share, Studios on December 19th, 2008 by Dave

hmm14.jpgRecords fell for the week ending December 14th, which will hence forth be known as Dark Knight Week.

The market share for the top 20 Blu-ray versus DVD came in at a record 14%.

Revenues were up almost 160% over the previous week, exceeding $60M, more than double the previous high!

Not too much to say about other titles this week - the Batman Begins sequel outsold the second place Wanted by almost 20 times, though it was interesting to see Lost: The Complete Fourth Season in the top 10.

On the per title market share, again the sales obscured the data we all wanted to see, with all 20 titles exceeding DVD sales.

That said, word is that Dark Knight gained almost 20% market share in the US. Perhaps Warner will clarify this for us at a later time.

None the less, if true, it is again a new record market share for Blu-ray Disc.

The Dark Knight Sells 1.7 Million Blu-ray Disc Worldwide

Posted in Amazon Bargains, BD Live, Studios, US Releases on December 17th, 2008 by Dave

darkknight.jpgThe internets are buzzing with Dark Knight news today.

The hottest news is that The Dark Knight sold 1.7 million copies on Blu-ray Disc in the first week worldwide.

This includes sales from US, UK, Canada, Japan, Benelux and Australia, so we don’t have numbers for the USA yet.

This clearly puts this release in a league of its own!

Also, I see over at Format War Central that Amazon has added a barometer showing market share for The Dark Knight DVD versus Blu-ray based on sales at their site.

Currently the Blu-ray Disc version has taken 38% of the sales for this title - an excellent achievement.

Of course we would expect Amazon to be skewed towards the Blu-ray demographic, and the likes of Wal-mart to be skewed towards the DVD side.

Also, I am thinking about hosting a community viewing of The Dark Knight for readers with BD Live enabled set tops or Playstation 3.

The idea would be to chat during the screening about the movie, the site and Blu-ray in general (I assume by then we will have seen the movie a few times!)

If you think you might be interested in participating, please note in the comments. If we can get a few people involved, I think it will be worth doing.

Dark Knight Blu-ray Contest Winner Announced

Posted in Commentary, Contests on December 16th, 2008 by Dave

darkknight.jpgThe winner of the Dark Knight contest, as drawn at random from random.org is Tim.

According to Tim’s contribution, he has just got his player, so I think I have decided to add an additional disc to the prize to help get his collection started.

Thanks to those those that contributed their ideas - I will make a post later this week to discuss the ideas presented.

Congratulations Tim, hope you enjoy the discs!

Contest Reminder - Win Dark Knight Blu-ray Disc

Posted in Commentary, Contests on December 13th, 2008 by Dave

darkknight.jpg

I am not sure if it is because everyone has a copy already, but right now your odds of winning are pretty decent!

I have another busy day on Sunday, so moderated comments might not show up until early evening PST…

Thanks to the good folks at Paramount and Disney, I will have some new highlighted titles and perhaps some additional contests as well coming up soon…

Batmania Continues - Dark Knight Blu-ray Disc Contest!

Posted in BD Live, Commentary, Contests on December 11th, 2008 by Dave

darkknight.jpgAs the week of the Dark Knight continues, I see another report on the initial sales, stating that the 600,000 units were US sales and that this represented a 21% market share for Blu-ray for this title.

I think this is better than most anticipated and it will be interesting to see what the market share is after 6 days of sales.

I also received a second copy of the movie due to an internet retailer screw up - instead of returning it, I think I will just give it away!

Contest is open to US residents (sorry international folks) and a valid email address must be used so that I can contact you if you win. Your email address will be kept private of course.

While there is a ’skill question’, the contest will be decided by a random number chosen from Random.org, not judged on the quality of your response.

The ’skill question’ this time is:

What additions would you like to see or what would you change about the Blu-ray Stats Site?

I know that there have been a number of suggestions in the forum and in comments in the past, but feel free to reiterate them here.

Answer in the comments with a valid email address to enter the contest.

Feel free to make additional, off topic comments, as long as the question is answered.

The contest closes midnight PST on Sunday December 14th.

Note that comments are moderated so don’t fret if it takes a while for you comment to post.

Dark Knight Chris Nolan Live Chat Blu-ray BD Live Invites Are Out!

Posted in BD Live, Studios, US Releases on December 11th, 2008 by Dave

invite.jpg About 1:30am PST Warner emailed out the invitations for the BD Live Community Screening Event for those who have already registered on their site and accessed BD Live with their player.

So if you have a copy of the movie and a BD Live capable player (a Playstation 3 will do just fine!), and have not sighed up for Warner BD Live membership, now is a good time to do so since they are only accepting the first 100,000 people who fulfill the requirements.

That may seem like a lot, but for a title that sold 600,000 on the first day, you have a lot of people to compete with!

I got an acceptance message when I RSVP’d - let us know ho it worked out for you!
