As the film opens, a warlock named Mordred lays siege to Camelot, seeking to establish a dominance over humankind.

King Uther Pendragon infiltrates Mordred’s lair and beheads him, destroying his forces and saving Camelot.

However Uther’s brother Vortigern orchestrates a coup, conjuring evil forces to kill Uther’s wife and defeat him in combat.

Uther’s son is the only survivor, eventually ending up in Londinium, where he is found and raised by prostitutes.

Arthur grows to be a skilled fighter and man of the streets, along with his friends Wet Stick and Back Lack.

When Arthur confronts a group of Vikings who had mistreated one of the prostitutes, the brothel is raided by the King’s Blacklegs.

Arthur tries to escape the city, but is caught and put on a ship with hundreds of other men, headed for King Vortigern’s castle.

A mysterious sword has appeared nearby, and the Blacklegs have been forcing all men of Arthur’s age to try to pull it from the stone.

When it is Arthur’s turn to try, he pulls the sword out, but is quickly overwhelmed by its vast power.

He wakes up in the dungeon, where Vortigern meets with him and reveals his true father.

Meanwhile, a mage woman and Uther’s former general Sir Bedivere plan to rescue Arthur at his execution.

But even if they can save him, will Arthur be willing to wield Excalibur and deliver the people from Vortigern’s cruelty?

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – My Thoughts

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is first and foremost a Guy Ritchie film, and your feeling about that will largely determine whether you like it.

Similar to his two movies featuring Sherlock Holmes, Ritchie has taken to the legend of King Arthur in a way that is uniquely his.

Unlike some directors, Guy Ritchie leaves his stamp on his movies, with unmistakably slick cinematography, editing and dialogue.

In a lot of ways the film also reminds me of A Knight’s Take, where aspects of the new age are merged with the tales of knights.

Ritchie has done a great job of producing and directing an Arthurian tale for the new century, but not everyone will appreciate these techniques applied to the genre.

I am a big fan of his work, and while it is not his best, I had a lot of fun experiencing the film.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword Cast, Crew and Performance

Along with Charlie Hunnam in the lead role, the cast features Jude Law, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Aidan Gillen, Eric Bana, Freddie Fox and Tom Wu.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword was directed by Guy Ritchie, whose body of work includes Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, and The Man from U.N.C.L.E..

The film has a generally poor critical reception, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 28%.

The public response was much stronger though, with an IMDb score of 7/10.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword had a rough time in the cinema, taking in $39.2M at the US box office.

However it did much better overseas, taking in over $107M in foreign markets.

The image quality is pretty solid throughout, which clean and sharp images which don’t disappoint.

With a 2K digital intermediate and a fairly muted colour palette, the regular Blu-ray likely offers a similar experience to the Ultra HD version in this case.
