CHIPS Blu-ray

June 27th, 2017 marked the arrival of the Warner Home Video Blu-ray release for the buddy cop film CHIPS.

Dax Shepard wrote the screenplay for this action comedy, based on the 1977–1983 television series of the same name.

The movie imagines an origin story for the main characters and takes CHIPS into the R Rated comedy realm.

It received largely negative reviews from the critics and went on to earn $25 million worldwide.

CHIPS the Movie

An FBI agent named Castillo goes undercover to arrest the criminal that killed his partner.

Meanwhile, a former freestyle motocross racer named Jon Baker is allowed to graduate for the California Highway Patrol on a probationary basis.

Jon is beginning a new career after his body has been left damaged in his many motocross accidents, in order to heal his relationship with his wife.

Agent Castillo goes undercover at the CHP as Francis Poncherello after an armored car robbery.

The goal of the FBI is to find out if there are corrupt cops working in the department in relation to the robbery.

Ponch is partnered with the rookie Baker, who has no idea about the corruption investigation.

Together the two misfits have to find a way to work together to bring down the bad guys while staying alive and keeping their jobs.

CHIPS – My Thoughts

CHIPS Blu-ray Screen Shot 2

CHIPS is a mixed bag of a comedy that will be largely unrecognizable as the television show from the late seventies.

The movie is set in Los Angeles with the CHP and features characters named Jon and Ponch.

Beyond that however there are few similarities.

Dax Shepard has amped up the concept with high octane action and high end motorcycles.

Perhaps the deciding factor for most will be the shift to R Rated comedy.

The movie features extensive adult content to earn it’s rating.

This includes a wide range of crass jokes, largely based around Ponch’s sex addiction and aversion to male contact.

Certainly the original CHIPS show would be hard pressed to hold one’s attention for a feature length movie.

However the inclusion of crass jokes may well be too much for fans of the original show.

For myself, I quite enjoyed the movie, which has some laugh out loud scenes and solid action sequences.

CHIPS Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast features Dax Shepard and Michael Pena in the lead roles, along with Rosa Salazar, Adam Brody, Richard T. Jones, Kristen Bell, Vincent D’Onofrio and Merrin Dungey.

CHIPS was directed by Dax Shepard, who is best known as a comedic actor but was also behind the films Brother’s Justice and Hit & Run.

The film has a rather poor critical reception, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 16%.

It did better with the public though, earning an IMDb score of 5.9/10.

CHIPS did ok in the cinema, taking in $18.6M at the US box office for an international total of $25M, in line with the film’s estimated budget.

CHIPS on Blu-ray Disc

CHIPS Blu-ray Screen Shot 4

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 34 Mbps, and is presented at 1.78:1 aspect ratio, filling the HDTV screen.

The high bitrate transfer looks excellent throughout, delivering over and above for an action comedy.

Generally the film is shot in a pretty straightforward manner, with clean images throughout.

Find full resolution PNG screen captures taken directly from the disc at the details page for CHIPS.

The main audio is lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with 24-bits resolution at 48 kHz.

The disc is a dual layer BD50, with 40.2 GB used and is coded for All Regions.

CHIPS Blu-ray – The Bonus Features

CHIPS Blu-ray Screen Shot 5

The Blu-ray release for CHIPS has a surprising collection of supplements, given the limited success of the movie in the cinema.

Typically such movies are released almost bare boned, but in this case there are a number of behind the scenes featurettes and deleted scenes.

This Is Not Your Dad’s CHIPS – 9:04

Director Dax Shepard talks about his inspiration for making the new version of CHIPS for the movie.

Shepard moved into R rated territory while taking the idea in the comedy direction.

The cast talk about their experiences and the strengths of the film, as well as the crass nature of the script.

Practical Pursuit – 9:15

This segment delves into the stunts in the movie, which were all done practically and in camera.

The camera cars needed to shoot the scenes also get a special mention.

Drones were also used to capture some of the extreme stunts.

Ducati: The Perfect Bike – 4:38

Shepard took advantage of his role as director to put one of his favourite motorcycles in the movie.

Ducati cooperated with the director to get the motorcycles that they needed for the film.

Deleted Scenes – 14:58

The deleted scenes can be watched with or without a director introduction by Dax Shepard.

The original plot was more convoluted than the final cut, so a number of scenes were cut for that reason.

Other scenes were just gratuitous and could be easily cut, or were a little out of character for some of the players.

All in all quite an extensive collection of some ten deleted scenes.

This release also includes an UltraViolet Digital Copy code and a DVD copy for legacy players.
