Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season – My Thoughts

Game of Thrones continues to deliver on its promise with another excellent season of the well known series.

The production has only become more and more elaborate over time, with the latest season costing more than $10M per episode.

Three full crews work long hours to produce the show, with locations all around the globe.

With just two seasons left to complete the story, season seven has been reduced back to seven episodes and will screen mid 2017.

The show is famous for its wide cast of characters, and not being shy about killing off key players.

As the number of important characters dwindle, we can feel the story coming together for what will no doubt be an epic conclusion in 2018.

All in all, Game of Thrones is an excellent show that takes television to new heights, and as such it deserves a place in the Blu-ray collection.

However it is important to note that Game of Thrones is adult entertainment, with violence, language and nudity that is not suitable for younger family members.

The ensemble cast includes Peter Dinklage, Kit Harington, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Aidan Gillen, Natalie Dormer and Sophie Turner.

The show is a fan favourite, with an IMDb score of 9.5/10.

The video on the discs is AVC at 1080p, encoded at around 23 Mbps, and is presented at the 1.78:1 HDTV aspect ratio.

The visual style differs from location to location, but all are presented with a strong digital representation here.

Overall the series is visually stunning, and there is no better way to see it than on the Blu-ray release.

Find full resolution PNG screen captures taken directly from the disc at the details page for Game of Thrones: The Complete Sixth Season.

The main audio is Dolby Atmos object based audio, the first television series to use the format.

The sound quality is exceptional, with imaginative and aggressive placement.

Note that the audio may default to Dolby Digital 5.1, so be sure to select Atmos if you have it, or want to hear the TrueHD 7.1 down-mix.

The discs are dual layer BD50, with around 48 GB used and are coded for All Regions.

Game of Thrones Season Six Blu-ray – The Bonus Features

The supplemental features are available on an episode by episode basis, with some overall season supplements on discs 2 and 4 of the set.

The location of the various supplements is pretty clear in the menu on all of the discs, so no guessing required.

In-Episode Guide

The In-Episode guide is a nifty pop-up window that is context sensitive and gives you the option to read about topics as the episode plays.

It offers a list of characters, locations, and relevant histories for the action on the screen at the time.

Certainly a handy reference if you can recall the relevance of a specific character or location.

Recreating the Dothraki World – Disc 2 – 20:15

This behind-the-scenes featurette delves into the creation of Vaes Dothrak, the spiritual city of the Dothraki.

The city was largely built for real in the Spanish countryside.

The burning of the temple is a key sequence in Vaes Dothrak, with both the interior and exterior shot in different locations.

We also get to see some of the dragon special effects in this segment.

The Battle of the Bastards: An In-Depth Look – Disc 4 – 30:01

The Battle of the Bastards was definitely one of the defining moments in Season 6, and the producers knew that it had to be epic.

This behind-the-scenes piece looks into the creation of the massive battle scene and the techniques used.

We get a lot of insight into the practical and special effects, along with interviews with key cast and crew.

With some 80 horses and 500 extras used on set, the production was a logistical challenge as well.

This is a must-see supplement to see the massive extend of the Game of Thrones production.

18 Hours at the Paint Hall – Disc 4 – 28:17

This supplement follows the three shooting units as they converge on the Paint Hall, which houses the primary shooting stages for Game of Thrones.

The cast and crew work from early morning to late at night to make schedule.

We get to see a lot of tricks of the trade used to create the complex and fantastic sets for the show.

This is another excellent behind-the-scenes view of a full day shooting the largest show on television.

Audio Commentaries

Pretty much all of the episodes have one or two commentaries available.

I was not able to get the commentaries to work with some of my equipment – however it did work on my portable Blu-ray player.

Some are mostly actors and some are mostly crew, but they are typically lively and entertaining, with a number of participants.

Keep in mind that it is possible the commentaries are difficult to access on some equipment.

Histories and Lore

Learn about the mythology of Westeros and Essos in 18 history pieces, each around 5 minutes.

Each one is told from the varying perspectives of the characters, narrated against an animated visual.

This is an great collection to learn the historical backdrop of the Game of Thrones.

Deleted Scenes – 11:08

A small collection of deleted scenes, including an extended version of the play in Braavos.
