Outlander Season Two Blu-ray

Outlander fans will enjoy the new Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Blu-ray release for Outlander: Season Two this month.

The show is based on the historical time travel Outlander series of novels by Diana Gabaldon.

The second season has 13 episodes and is based on the Dragonfly in Amber novel.

It stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a World War II nurse who finds herself transported back to 1743 Scotland.

Outlander: Season Two the Show

Outlander Season Two Blu-ray Screen Shot 1

Outlander opens in 1945, where a former World War II nurse Claire Randall and her husband Frank visit Inverness, Scotland.

When exploring the standing stones at Craigh na Dun, Claire finds herself mysteriously transported back in time to 1743.

Claire is rescued from Frank’s ancestor Captain Jack Randall by some Scotsmen, and uses her medical training to help the injured.

She learns of her unusual fate, and remains a ‘guest’ of Clan MacKenzie, who are suspicious of her.

Eventually Claire marries Jamie Fraser, a fugitive from the British who has also crossed paths with Jack Randall.

Season two opens with Claire returning to 1948 at Craigh na Dun, eventually reuniting with Frank.

It becomes clear that in her time away from Frank, she had somewhat moved on with her life.

The story cuts back to the past, where Claire and Jamie have traveled to Paris to hide from the British.

There they attempt to prevent the Jacobite risings by sabotaging the efforts of the pretender Charles Stuart to raise a war chest.

They make new friends and enemies as they become close to Charles in the hope of stopping the future battle that kills so many Highlanders.

Outlander: Season Two – My Thoughts

Outlander is a excellent period drama with some additional supernatural elements thrown in.

The title refers to Claire’s status in Scottland as an English born outsider.

Initially I thought that the show was ‘Starz answer to Game of Thrones‘, but quickly realized that there are vast differences.

Certainly there is a TVMA share of sex, violence and occasional language, but the strong focus on just the two characters is vastly different to Thrones.

In fact, almost everything in the story is presented from the perspective of Claire or Jamie, with other events taking place off camera.

This no doubt creates a serious challenge in creating a coherent story, but also adds to the intrigue from the audience perspective.

The characters play pretty true, though occasionally lean towards bouts of stupid actions that puts them in danger.

In season one particularly, Claire made many choices with a blatant disregard for her personal safety and that of others.

Nonetheless the show is a lot of fun to watch, with seriously evil villains and a complex plot.

I thoroughly recommend taking a look at Outlander, though you really need to start at the beginning with Season One if you have not seen it already!

Also great to see that Starz has renewed the series for a third and fourth season, based on the novels Voyager and Drums of Autumn.

The cast includes Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan in the key roles, along with Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish, Duncan Lacroix, Stanley Weber, James Fleet and Andrew Gower.

The public has responded very positively to the show, giving it an IMDb score of 8.5/10.

Outlander: Season Two on Blu-ray Disc

The video is AVC at 1080p, encoded at around 22.5 Mbps, and is presented at 1.78:1 aspect ratio.

The video quality throughout is pretty strong, and they do an interesting thing where the 1940’s has a muted colour palette compared to the 1740’s.

The film makers have become adept at the low light and candle lit scenes, showing off the sets and wardrobe.

Occasionally locations are enhanced with computer generated imagery, and sometimes this looks a little funky.

Nonetheless this Blu-ray release beautifully captures the show in all its grandeur, with the technology seldom obvious.

The main audio is lossless 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio with 16-bits resolution at 48 kHz.

The discs are dual layer BD50, with around 40 GB used and are coded for Region A.

Outlander Season Two Blu-ray – The Bonus Features

A number of supplements included in the season are spread over the last two discs in the set.

There are some though that appear on the disc along with the episode that they relate to.

All-New Deleted and Extended Scenes with Introductions by Ronald D. Moore

The deleted scenes are included in the episode menu for each episode for season two.

Moore introduces the deleted scenes, typically offering an explanation as to what the scene involves and why it was cut.

Many are cut for time and often Moore expresses regret that they had to be cut, and joy that they can now be seen.

Outlander Podcasts

The podcasts are also in the episode menu for each episode, and play as an audio commentary.

Be wary though that the podcast audio usually only applies to the episode itself, and the ‘previously on’ introduction plays with the original audio.

The Characters of Season Two – 13:43

The featurettes are located on the last two discs of the set, starting with The Characters of Season Two.

The new characters for the second season are introduced and discussed in this segment.

Cast and crew discuss both the villains and allies that affected the lives of the Frasers.

The actors that portray the characters also talk about their traits and quirks.

Designing History: The Costumes of Outlander – 10:55

The team spends hundreds of hours working on the costumes to ensure their authenticity.

The fashion of 18th century France, with its beauty and luxury, is recreated in the workshop.

We get a great look at the variations in wardrobe for the different characters.

The actors also discuss what they get to wear and challenges that the costumes present.

Recreating 18th Century Paris – 11:54

Many of the internal sets for Paris were actually designed and built from scratch for the show.

Props were also built or bought to create an authentic presentation of the era.

A number of other locations already existed in the United Kingdom, and also in Prague for the Paris exteriors.

Outlander Season Two Blu-ray Screen Shot 3

This segment is excellent for folks who want to see the lengths the crew goes to for authenticity.

Gag Reel – 5:24

Your typical montage of bloopers and outtakes from the production, complete with farting horses.

Jamie and Claire: To Hell and Back – 10:31

The actors and crew discuss the trials and tribulations of the main characters in the show.

There are lots of spoilers in this one so don’t watch it until you have seen the complete season!

From Book to Screen: Discovering the Differences – 10:44

The author of the books discusses the adaptation of the books for the film.

The film makers also talk about the constraints and advantages of presenting the story visually.

The television episodic format is also a driving factor in the way the story is presented.

Naturally some aspects of the books had to be simplified or ignored.

We also get to see some teaser information about what comes next in this segment.

Faith Extended Episode – 1:14:35

The set features an extended version of the pivotal Faith episode with a good 15 minutes of additional footage included.

One of the edits is a bit rough but we get significantly more insight into the characters’ reactions to the events in this version.
