Star Trek Beyond 3D Blu-ray 3D

The big release this week is Star Trek Beyond 3D, on Blu-ray 3D from Paramount Home Entertainment on November 1st.

Simon Pegg and Doug Jung collaborated on the screenplay for the film, based on the series created by Gene Roddenberry.

It is the thirteenth film in the Star Trek franchise and the third in the reboot series.

The film is dedicated to Anton Yelchin, who died a month before release, and fellow Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, who passed away during pre-production.

Star Trek Beyond the Movie

The film opens three years into the five year mission of the USS Enterprise, and James T. Kirk is becoming somewhat weary.

After a failed diplomatic mission they arrive at a massive space station named Yorktown, where people from many alien races live in harmony.

The Enterprise is dispatched on a rescue mission at short notice, after an alien named Kalara states that her ship is stranded on a nearby planet.

However the rescue attempt is ambushed and the Enterprise is quickly torn apart by a massive swarm of small ships.

Krall and his crew board the ship, looking for a relic called an Abronath that Kirk had stored after the failed diplomatic mission.

As the crew to abandon the Enterprise, the ship crashes onto the planet and the crew are scattered.

Krall and his cohorts capture many of the crew and imprison them.

Kirk and the remaining crew at large have to find each other and draw up a plan to rescue the others.

Meanwhile Krall’s plans for the Abronath threaten the lives of all in the Federation on Yorktown, and beyond!

Star Trek Beyond – My Thoughts

Star Trek Beyond is a strong addition to the rebooted Star Trek franchise, and the Star Trek universe in general.

I haven’t been overly thrilled with the reboot by J.J. Abrams, with the first two movies offering a lot of action at the cost of substance.

When I heard that Justin Lin was set to direct the third installment, I was terrified of seeing Fast and Furious in Space!

However while the trailer hinted that may be the case, the final film ended up being considerably more worthwhile.

The movie starts off a bit slow, but once the adventure begins, it feels a lot like an ‘original series’ episode.

The ideals of Star Fleet and the Federation are taken advantage of by an alien race with opposing strengths.

Kirk and crew quickly find themselves on a foreboding planet with some unfriendly aliens and have to work hard to survive and save the day.

Of course the movie has big budget sets and extensive stunts and effects that the original series lacked.

On the other hand, at its core it pays significant homage to the spirit of Star Trek.

Perhaps being released on the 50th anniversary of Star Trek gave them extra incentive to get this movie right in terms of the Star Trek universe.

In any case I found the film to be a fitting addition to the Star Trek cannon, and for me is one of the better of the reboot films.

Star Trek fans will certainly want to add this title to their collection.

Star Trek Beyond Cast, Crew and Performance

The returning cast includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, Zoe Saldana, John Cho, and Anton Yelchin, with new members Sofia Boutella and Idris Elba.

Star Trek Beyond was directed by Justin Lin, the man behind films like Annapolis and a number of films from the Fast & Furious franchise.

The critical response to the movie was very positive, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 84%.

It was also popular with the public, earning an IMDb score of 7.2/10.

Star Trek Beyond was a success in the cinema, taking in $158.8M at the US box office, for a total over $340M internationally.

Star Trek Beyond on Blu-ray 3D

The video on the disc is a stereo MVC 1080p encode at 27 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.39:1.

The image quality is general pretty strong throughout, especially in the external daylight scenes.

There are a lot of low light scenes though, and some of these have a bit of a muddy feel to them.

Generally though this is a high budget production with strong visuals and high quality effects.

The 3D is pretty solid throughout, though it is a conversion and few of the shots seem to feature any out of screen experiences.

Then again there is a huge amount of depth in many of the shots, which looks pretty awesome in 3D.

While it is likely fans of 3D will enjoy the film in the 3D format, it is unlikely to create any new converts.

See the details page for Star Trek Beyond 3D for full resolution PNG screen captures taken directly from the disc.

The main audio is Dolby Atmos object based audio – great to see on the Blu-ray and Blu-ray 3D.

This immersive sound mix offers the best home theater experience possible for action movies.

The disc is a dual layer BD50, with 46.3 GB used and is coded for All Regions.

Certainly Star Trek has always been a positive view of the future and a culmination of the best traits of mankind.

For Leonard and Anton – 5:04

We get to see a tribute to the legendary Leonard Nimoy, as well as cast member Anton Yelchin.

While Nimoy passed away during the writing phase, Yelchin died shortly after the film was shot.

The team obviously had time to prepare the tribute to Leonard Nimoy, with footage from his career and cast and crew interviews.

The tribute to Yelchin is not as polished, and is mostly a montage of Anton in his roles and behind the scenes footage.

Gag Reel – 5:13

A five minute montage of on-set bloopers and out-takes.

Some of these are pretty amusing and it is a fun collection to watch.

This release includes a DVD Copy for legacy players, and an UltraViolet Digital Copy code that can also be used for iTunes.
