The Conjuring 2 Blu-ray

The Conjuring 2 is the latest Blu-ray title from Warner Home Video, released on September 13th, 2016.

Carey and Chad Hayes, James Wan and David Leslie Johnson penned the screenplay for this horror thriller.

It is a direct sequel to The Conjuring from 2013, though is the third movie in the franchise if you count the spinoff Annabelle.

The story again follows paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.

The Conjuring 2 the Movie

In London back in 1977, the Hodgson family experiences strange occurrences in their council home.

The second oldest child Janet has begun sleepwalking and talking with an entity who claims it is his house.

Soon all four siblings and their mother Peggy witness paranormal events in the house.

The family seeks refuge with their neighbors and the media becomes interested in the case.

Janet appears to be possessed by the spirit of Bill Wilkins, an old man who lived and eventually died in the house.

As Janet shows further signs of demonic possession the story reaches the Ed and Lorraine Warren, who are asked to assist the local church in the investigation.

The Warrens reluctantly agree, but can they help the Hodgson family now that the evil spirits and demons have such a strong grip on the household?

The Conjuring 2 – My Thoughts

The Conjuring 2 Blu-ray Screen Shot 2

The Conjuring 2 is a strong sequel to the original Conjuring film, integrating a number of the original elements and adding some new.

The Enfield case was pretty famous in the media in the late seventies and is no doubt a good choice for the basis of a movie.

Naturally while it is based on real events, there are a lot of fictional elements to heighten the experience for the audience.

The film makers behind the Conjuring films are skilled at their art and the film is genuinely creepy throughout.

There are a number of solid scares in the movie too.

I think it transcends the typical horror genre by tying into historical events, working towards a movie that is equally a mystery thriller.

Fans of scary movies should definitely check out The Conjuring 2 and other films in the series.

A spin-off film titled The Nun is currently in development.

The Conjuring 2 Cast, Crew and Performance

The cast features Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as Ed and Lorraine Warren, along with supporting cast members Frances O’Connor, Madison Wolfe, Simon McBurney and Franka Potente.

The Conjuring 2 was directed by James Wan, who was also behind films like Saw, Insidious, Insidious: Chapter 2, The Conjuring, Furious 7, and Dead Silence.

The movie has a very strong critical reception, with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 80% and an IMDb score of 7.6/10.

The Conjuring 2 was a big success in the cinema, taking in $102.5M at the US box office and double that overseas, against a $40M budget.

The Conjuring 2 on Blu-ray Disc

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 22.5 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.40:1.

The film has a number of distinctive looks, with variations based on location and the level of evil present.

The UK locations have a decidedly muted palette compared to the US locations.

Many night shots feature, where the images are typically very dark.

We do see some unusual colouring in the low light, though it is hard to say if the artifacts are the result of the digital cameras or the encoding.

These cases are few and far between, and generally the film accurately reflects the intent of the film makers.

For full resolution PNG screen captures taken directly from the disc you can check the details page for The Conjuring 2.

The main audio is Dolby Atmos object based audio, which will play as TrueHD 7.1 if you don’t have Atmos equipment.

The mix is excellent and involving, with the sounds of the poltergeists coming from all directions.

Perhaps Atmos audio should be mandatory for horror films!

The disc is a dual layer BD50, with 38.0 GB used and is coded for All Regions.

The Conjuring 2 Blu-ray – The Bonus Features

While it was quite a low budget production, this release has a decent collection of supplemental features.

Crafting the Conjuring 2 – 10:09

The film makers talk about the techniques used to shoot the movie in this making of segment.

The producers aimed to create a truly creepy film, and by all accounts they succeeded.

The cast and crew weigh in on shooting the film in London and creating the atmosphere for the film.

Set and production design are covered in this segment also.

The Enfield Poltergeist: Living The Horror – 12:46

The Hodgson family members talk about their personal experiences from the seventies.

The photographer for the Daily Mirror newspaper also discusses what he saw at the time.

We get to hear some of the original audio recordings, and Lorraine Warren is also interviewed.

Warren is reunited with the Hodgson family members on the movie set.

Creating Crooked – 6:44

The ‘crooked man’ character is the focus of this segment.

This featurette features both the inspiration for the character and the character design.

Perhaps the most amazing is the actor that was found who was so thin and tall in real life.

The Conjuring 2: Hollywood’s Haunted Stage – 5:08

The Conjuring 2 Blu-ray Screen Shot 3

Paranormal investigator Johnny Matook visits Stage 4 on the Warner Brothers lot.

The Conjuring 2 was shot on this sound stage, which has a reputation for being haunted.

Sounds of Scary – 7:00

Composer Joseph Bishara talks about the recording sessions for the score and soundtrack in this featurette.

Like many films, classically trained musicians form a small orchestra for the sound recording.

Bishara also talks about his process for creating the score based on what is shown on screen.

Deleted Scenes – 6:31

The deleted scenes are shown in context, and vary in length.

Some are pretty interesting, including a scene where Janet gets picked on at school.

All in all this is a pretty extensive collection of supplements for a low budget title.

This release also includes an UltraViolet Digital Copy code.
