South Park Nineteenth Season Blu-ray

South Park: The Complete Nineteenth Season is the latest television Blu-ray release from Paramount Home Entertainment on September 6th, 2016.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone created this animated sitcom for Comedy Central.

The show follows Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, Eric Cartman, and Kenny McCormick, and their adventures in and around the small Colorado town.

The show has crude language and uses surreal humor to satirize current topics.

South Park Nineteenth Season – The Show

To kick off the nineteenth season, Principal Victoria is fired due to making a Cosby joke, and is replaced by PC Principal.

PC Principal is not tolerant of any form of hate speech, and calls out people’s micro-aggressions, forcing them to check their privilege.

While extremely politically correct, PC Principal rules the school with an iron fist, aggressively threatening those who don’t concede to his demands.

The season takes on many current topics, including gun violence, immigration, elections, gentrification, and the sophistication of advertising and sponsored content.

Of course political correctness is front and center with the new PC Principal character and his fraternity of like minded brothers.

Stan’s dad joins the fraternity and torments Kyle into confessing his admiration for Caitlyn Jenner.

Jimmy comes under scrutiny as the school newspaper editor when he allows language that PC Principal considers offensive.

However Jimmy faces an underlying threat from an even more powerful enemy that is secretly behind all the changes is South Park.

South Park Nineteenth Season – My Thoughts

South Park retains its razor sharp satire in its nineteenth season on air.

In addition to lampooning popular culture and trends, the creators of the show went a step further in the ‘modernization’ of the show.

Even more than last, this season features episodic continuity from start to finish.

That said most of the episodes had their own lead theme that was in turn used to move the overall season arc forward.

Many of the themes this season were social media related, and the new culture taking over South Park allowed for exploration of many aspects of political correctness.

While the theme is political correctness, the show remains edgy and defiant.

In the a growing marketplace for content, the show does its best to remain relevant and a cornerstone of the Comedy Central slate.

Each episode is typically written and produced during the week preceding its broadcast, which was no doubt even more challenging given the serial continuity.

Note that the home video releases for South Park do not sensor the audio, so the episodes are not at all suitable for children.

Overall I think that the creators of South Park continue to deliver solid episodes.

Season twenty will premiere this week on September 14th.

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 16 Mbps, and is presented at 1.78:1 aspect ratio, filling the HDTV screen.

While the bitrate would be considered low for live action, it is plenty for the animation for South Park.

The images are always clean and sharp, with typically a bright colour palette.

Occasionally episodes contain live action video or scenes that mimic other animation or cinematic styles.

#SocialCommentary on all Episodes

Each episode can be watched with a social commentary pop-up.

Here we see the tweets from Comedy Central that make revelations about the episodes and characters.

Sometimes the tweets reveal very subtle references and Easter Eggs in the episodes.

Deleted Scenes

The first disc features a collection of deleted scenes, with a scene or two from each episode in the collection.

Note that even episodes on the second disc have the deleted scenes on disc one.

So make sure you watch the whole season before delving into the deleted scenes to avoid spoilers.

Season Commentary

On previous releases Trey Parker and Matt Stone recorded a short commentary for each episode.

This time around they recorded a commentary for the whole season that runs just under half an hour.

It actually starts with a very quick summary of season eighteen.

Here they discuss the move towards episodic continuity and away from the sit-com model.

The pair talk about the inspiration for each episode as a few shots from each is shown in a montage.

Fans of the show who are interested in the creative process with find this to be a great supplement.

South Park Nineteenth Season Blu-ray Synopsis:

This stunning and brave 19th season of South Park follows a serialized model for the first time in the show’s history. The season is built around an extended satire of political correctness beginning when a new socially conscious principal comes to town. In other episodes, Mr. Garrison makes a bid for the White House, Randy takes the lead in gentrifying the town, and everyone is looking for their safe space.
