Red 2

Red 2 is the latest Blu-ray title from Summit Entertainment, on shelves this week with a November 26th, 2013 release date.

This action-comedy film was a sequel to the 2010 film Red.

The movies were inspired by the DC Comics comic book series created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner.

The film stars many from the original cast, along with some new characters in this new addition to the franchise.

Red 2 the Movie

The movie opens with Frank Moses and girlfriend Sarah Ross attempting to live the quiet normal life in the suburbs.

The pair are approached by Marvin Boggs, who warns Frank that they are still in danger.

When Marvin drives away, his car explodes.

Frank and Sarah attend Marvin’s funeral where he eventually accepts that Marvin is dead and delivers a heart-felt eulogy.

After the funeral, government agents detain Frank and take him to Yankee White Facility for questioning.

Jack Horton arrives at the site looking for Moses, and kills any of the facility’s personnel who stand in his way.

When he reaches Frank, he tells him that he will torture Sarah if needed to get information out of Frank.

Frank escapes with the help of Marvin, who turns out to be alive after all.

Along with Sarah, Marvin and Frank go on the run and Marvin explains that they are a target because they were listed in a leaked document as participants in a secret operation code-named Nightshade.

The operation during the Cold War era aimed to smuggle a nuclear weapon piece by piece into Russia.

Horton also works for the US Government and tells the world agencies that Frank and his crew are nuclear terrorists.

Victoria calls and tells them she has accepted a contract from MI6 to kill Frank.

Horton also hires the world’s best contract killer Han Cho-Bai to kill Frank as well.

With the world’s law enforcement on their tail, Frank, Marvin and Sarah must use their unique skills to find out who set them up and clear their names.

Red 2 takes up where the original Red left off and is just as much fun as the original.

The movie takes our heroes all over the world as they chase down the mystery behind operation Nightshade.

The story is full of twists and turns, with a good amount of comedy thrown in for good measure.

Again it is fun to see a number of typically serious actors playing against their usual casting.

Personally I thoroughly enjoyed the film, and while far from high art, it is a lot of fun and fans of the first film will no doubt enjoy the sequel.

The cast includes Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Mary-Louise Parker, Helen Mirren and Brian Cox from the original film, adding Catherine Zeta-Jones, Neal McDonough, Byung-Hun Lee and Anthony Hopkins.

Red 2 was directed by Dean Parisot, who also helmed Galaxy Quest and Home Fries.

The critical response to the movie was fairly middle of the road with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 42%, though it did better at the IMDb with a score of 6.7/10.

Red 2 earned $53.3M at the US box office, and almost total $140M worldwide.

The video on the disc is an AVC 1080p encode at 31 Mbps, and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 2.40:1.

While the movie does have some darker scenes, for the most part it looks great throughout.

The movie was shot on 35mm film and retains that look on the Blu-ray transfer.

See the details page for Red 2 for full resolution PNG screen captures taken directly from the disc.

The main audio is lossless DTS-HD Master Audio with 7.1 channels – 24 bits resolution at 48 kHz.

The disc is a dual layer BD50 and is coded for Region A.

This release also comes with a small collection of supplemental features.

The Red 2 Experience is a multi-part featurette covering the production of the movie from a number of angles.

This 34 minute behind the scenes documentary starts with a segment on The Cast.

Each of the characters and actors gets their time in the limelight and are discussed by cast and crew.

Many of the original cast return for the sequel, and new cast members are added.

The second section covers The Weapons from the movie.

This delves into everything from the hand guns and knives to the 3500 round per minute mini-gun.

The choices in weapons were tailored to match the personality of the characters and the scenes.

The Tactics refers to the tactical twists and turns in the story that the heroes use to gain an advantage.

Scenes like Frank’s initial escape, Mirren’s playing the insane Queen and the luring of The Frog all get coverage.

Lastly you can’t talk about an action movie without taking a look at The Stunts.

This segment also discusses the balance of action and comedy in the film.

The other supplements are ‘extra footage’ collections.

The Gag Reel is a 4 minute compilation of outtakes from the movie, including various goofs and gaffs.

There are also 4 minutes of deleted and extended scenes from various parts of the movie.

This release also includes a DVD Copy for legacy players and a Digital Copy Code for UltraViolet that can also be used for iTunes.
