In what will no doubt be one of the top selling Blu-ray releases this year, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has announced Marvel’s The Avengers for a September 25th, 2012 Blu-ray 3D release.

The film smashed the industry record for the biggest domestic opening of all time with $207.4M, and crossed the $1 billion global box office threshold in 19 days.

Currently the movie stands as the number three global and domestic release of all time.

This film features the long anticipated team up of the top Marvel super hero characters, with many played by the actors that made them famous in their individual movies.

The cast includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard.

Marvel’s The Avengers was directed by Joss Whedon, who was also behind Firefly, Serenity, Dollhouse, Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog and Thor.

The film scored very well with the critics, including a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, and an IMDb score of 8.6/10.

Marvel’s The Avengers has also earned $601.2M at the US box office.

Planned features for the disc include an AVC 1080p encode with a native 7.1 DTS-HD Master Audio lossless sound track.

Supplements include all the usual goodies, plus a Second Screen app that can be used on the iPad or iPhone – the latter being a first for Disney Second Screen.

This release also includes a Blu-ray, DVD, Digital Copy and music download.

The retail price is $49.99, though you can pre-order it from Amazon for $34.99, saving 30%!

The retail for the Blu-ray only is $39.99, and Amazon has it for $35.99, though I imagine that will drop to around $28 (Blu-rayStats Wishlist).
