Record $69M Blu-ray Revenue for the Week Ending November 29th
Posted in Market Share on December 7th, 2009 by Dave
The Blu-ray market share was 12% for a Black Friday week with a record $69.06M revenue, according to Home Media Magazine.
The previous record of $60M was set in December 2008 and the results for the week were over double that for the previous year, a 224% increase.
At the same time, DVD sales were actually down in revenue almost 8% compared to last year’s Black Friday week.
The DaVinci Code prequel Angels & Demons from Sony Pictures was the top seller for the week, with the Star Trek franchise reboot from Paramount very close behind in 2nd place
X-Men Origins: Wolverine from Fox, Up from Disney and Monsters vs. Aliens from Paramount/DreamWorks rounded out the top five for the week.
New release Four Christmases from Warner took 11th place while the direct to video Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws from Disney came in 14th.
Looking at market share per title, the Angels & Demons Blu-ray release took a solid 25% market share, while the family targeted release Santa Buddies: The Legend of Santa Paws sold only 6% on Blu-ray Disc.
Star Trek was a very strong performer, selling one Blu-ray Disc for every two DVDs sold.
The comedy title Four Christmases managed only one in ten copies sold on Blu-ray Disc, indicating again how Blu-ray success for any given title is significantly skewed by genre.

It is interesting to see some new comments on an old article saying that Blu-ray will never be more than a niche product. I am not sure how people define niche these days - there are 7 Blu-ray titles from this year that have greater than 25% market share, and Blu-ray continues to grow while DVD shrinks.
Perhaps it is time for a new Featured Article on the current state of play…

It’s for a new featured article, all right. Wow, 7 titles greater than 25% share? I am so excited for the growth of the blu-ray format.
I will be giving blu-ray movies as Christmas presents this Christmas. Hopefully, it will get the word out even more.
