Blu-ray Rides Pixar Balloons to a $41 Million Revenue Week

hmm17.jpgThe week ending November 15th was good for Blu-ray, with a 17% market share versus DVD and a revenue of $41.03M for the week, according to Home Media Magazine.

Disney had a superb week with their Pixar releases, with the Up Blu-ray release taking the top spot, selling five times as many copies as the second placed Monsters, Inc.

up.jpgThe top five was rounded out by recent releases G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra from Paramount, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen from DreamWorks and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, again from Disney.

New releases The Ugly Truth from Sony and Heat from Warner took 6th and 7th place respectively, while recent releases The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 from Sony and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs from Fox took 8th and 9th position.

Other new releases to make the top 20 included the super extended Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut from Warner in 15th place and the epic Godzilla from Sony Pictures in 17th place.

Surprisingly, the classic It’s a Wonderful Life from Paramount remained in the chart, taking 18th place.

watchmentheultimatecut.jpgOver to marker share per title, we now have a new release title that sold more copies on Blu-ray than DVD.

The new Watchmen: The Ultimate Cut release had 54% market share for the week, making it the first title released simultaneously with the DVD to outsell the older technology.

To be honest I am a little surprised that it happened so soon, but it is great to see.

Up was also a strong player for Blu-ray with 24% on Blu-ray, while The Ugly Truth was at the other end of the spectrum with only 6% of its sales on Blu-ray Disc, putting it on a par with Aliens In The Attic.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra continues to do well on Blu-ray with 25% market share, as does Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen with 24%.

It is certainly encouraging to see a lot of the big summer releases selling a quarter of their volumes on Blu-ray Disc.
