s550.jpgIf you were looking to get a new Blu-ray player or upgrade to the latest BD Live capable set top, or even add a Playstation 3 - now might be a good time!

Amazon currently has a deal where if you buy a new player and two Sony movie titles, you can choose two more movies for free!

Alternatively, there is a second deal where you can buy a set top or Blu-ray capable Viao laptop and get a free movie.

Both promotions feature the Sony BDP-S350 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player and the Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Disc Player, so you can buy in with or upgrade to the latest models that feature BD Live network capability (via firmware upgrade for the 350) and Bonus View picture in picture decoders.

Right now the BDP-S350 is only $224 and the BDP-S550 is $329.99 - great prices for the latest models - and both come with free shipping!

I am getting ready to buy a blu ray dvd player and plan to purchase one of the two with NetFlix. Does Sony have anything out now or coming soon to compete with this service? For streaming video, I don’t really care about HD right now. What Sony model do I need to buy now to be able to take advantage of some future services?

I am not aware of any Sony plans to support streaming from the likes of Netflix.

The reality is though that both of the current models should be capable with a firmware upgrade - that doesn’t mean that Sony will do it - but it is not impossible.

I guess it is slightly more likely that the BDP-S550 will be more capable since it may have more memory or more capable CPU… but realistically I kinda doubt that Sony would add such a nice feature for free via a firmware upgrade.

If it is a strong need you are probably best to stick with the ones that claim the capability.
