Market Share Leaps Forward for Blu-ray Disc for the Week Ending July 13th

hmm12.jpgBlu-ray Disc close to doubled its market share versus DVD for the week ending July 13th, according to Home Media Magazine.

Blu-ray Disc managed 12% market share when comparing the top 20 titles for each format - a new record high for Blu-ray and a huge step up from the previous week’s 7% market share.

While DVD revenues were down, Blu-ray revenues were up just over 7% compared to the previous week, at $8.42M - so perhaps it was more of a bad week for DVD than a good week for Blu-ray. Regardless this is a nice achievement for Blu-ray.

Hardly surprisingly, Batman Begins was the hot seller, taking the first place by a wide margin, as well as third place for the Batman Begins (Limited Edition Gift Set). Batman Gotham Knight also did very well, selling almost half the numbers of Batman Begins. The top five was filled out by Vantage Point and 10,000 B.C..

In the market share versus DVD by title, of course Batman Begins was the top contender in both of its forms. I am still surprised to see Cloverfield and There Will Be Blood continuing to sell around one third of their copies on Blu-ray Disc. 300, Rambo and I Am Legend also continue to do well, with market share in the high teens or low twenties.

All in all a great week for Blu-ray - perhaps one that shows that the format isn’t as dead as some of the press would like us to believe.
