Pioneer - Blu-ray Recorders and 400GB Blu-ray Discs

400gb.jpgReading over at Engadget today I see that Pioneer has been busy in the R & D laboratory.

First up there is the 400 GB Blu-ray Disc with 16 layers of 25 GB each - quite a few more than the commercially available dual layer discs.

One of the reasons I preferred Blu-ray was that the layer structure was extensible - that said, my expectations really didn’t extend much beyond 8 layer discs - 16 layers is quite a feat!

Apparently we will learn more on July 13th when Pioneer discusses the breakthrough in detail.

The second piece of Pioneer news Engadget had to share was that Pioneer is planning to release Blu-ray recorders in Japan by years end, joining Sharp, Sony and Panasonic who already produce Blu-ray recorder systems n Japan. Hardly surprising I guess considering that they produce PC drives but not set top recorders yet.

I am sure that we will hear more about that as the year continues, though personally I want to know when my TiVo HD will sport a Blu-ray drive for offline storage…
