Blu-ray Market Share Week Ending June 7th

Another fairly decent week for Blu-ray market share and sales last week as reported by Home Media Magazine.
Just a point off the high, Blu-ray achieved 9% market share in the top 20 title comparison with DVD. Revenues were down a tiny amount but still just over $10M for the week.
In the top 20 chart there are quite a number of surprises to me. Firstly, the chart was topped by Semi-Pro, which was closely followed by Rambo, National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets and Cloverfield. There Will Be Blood took 5th place. Other strong performers included The Eye in 6th place and Meet the Spartans in 8th, selling almost a third as many as Semi-Pro - all evidence that day and date releases of even ‘bad’ movies typically do better than catalogue titles.
Speaking of catalog, there were quite a number of strong catalogue releases - the Dirty Harry Ultimate Collector’s Edition came in 7th - great for a catalogue box set - and Patton was in 12th position. On the TV side, Weeds - Season Three took 9th - a nice success for Lions Gate.
There were also some interesting numbers in the per title market share chart. Semi-Pro and Weeds - Season Three both scored 7% for BD while The Eye achieved 6.4% and Meet the Spartans was down at 4.3%. Needless to say, Patton did very well with 71%, though I am surprised that none of the other war titles from Fox appear on the chart. Cloverfield and There Will be Blood were technically catalogue releases, missing the date of the DVDs by some weeks - however both sold roughly half their units on Blu-ray last week - perhaps a sign that people actually waited for the Blu-rays rather than settled for the DVDs.
All in all, I call revenues over $10M a good week - it will be interesting to see if Blu-ray sales can maintain this level.
