hmm080525.jpgSome good news for Blu-ray this week in terms of market share and revenues. Home Media Magazine is reporting that, boosted by sales of the National Treasure movies, both market share and revenue were up over last week.

After a number of weeks at 5% of the top 20 DVD/BD market share, this week we see Blu-ray garnering 7%. Revenues are up over 54% to $12.38M. These revenue numbers are the best reported yet by Nielsen, while the market share peaked at 8% week ending March 30. So all in all a good week.

The Top 20 Chart this week was easily dominated by the National Treasure movies, with the first three spots going to National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, National Treasure and the twin pack National Treasure / National Treasure 2 - Book of Secrets. The fourth and fifth spot were taken by The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and V for Vendetta. Most of the remaining top 20 were not so interesting - except perhaps the fairly highly priced WWE - Wrestlemania 24 coming in 10th.

Home Media Magazine included the per title market share versus DVD chart again this week. To be honest I was a little surprised that Book of Secrets only sold 6.89% on Blu-ray - I expected more for an action title. Untraceable was also down around 7%. Interestingly enough WWE - Wrestlemania 24 did even better at just over 10% for Blu-ray sales. The big winners again were hot, recently released catalog titles like Twister, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and V for Vendetta. The Day and Date titles that continue to do very well on Blu-ray relative to DVD are 300 and I Am Legend, both exceeding 15% market share for Blu-ray.

In any case, it is good to see improvement in the revenues for Blu-ray Disc this last week - the more that Blu-ray brings in, the more seriously it will be taken by the studios, which can only mean good things for fans of High Definition.
