Dark City to Feature Seamless Branching

I am elated to read that the New Line Blu-ray Disc release of Alex Proyas’ cult classic Dark City will feature seamless branching.
Personally I think that truly seamless branching is one of the key features of Blu-ray Disc and one that could be used a lot more often to offer unrated and rated cuts of movies as well as Theatrical vs. Director’s Cut as is the case here.
We will also be treated to a 7.1 lossless DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack, a bunch of commentaries, a couple of documentaries and a subtitle based fact track on the Director’s Cut.
The $34.99 price is a little steep for a catalogue title but I am seriously looking forward to this release. Now if we can only get Disney to release The Crow, we can have a nice set of discs in the Proyas corner (assuming one already has I, Robot!)…

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for seamless branching on a theoretical Lord of the Rings Blu-ray release — Theatrical and Extended versions. That will eliminate the need for two physical editions of the film.

Lord of the Rings is certainly a key title and one would hope that it is done right in every sense. Seeing New Line use branching on Dark City is an encouraging sign for LotR.
It certainly is encouraging to see more use of branching. I hope that it will become a much more common feature moving forward.
