Lionsgate to Launch Art House Label

diva.jpgWe read at The Hollywood Reporter that Lionsgate is taking aim at the art house market. The studio is planning a spring launch of the Meridian Collection, a new branded label for groundbreaking films from around the world. Lionsgate plans to release two high-end DVDs every three months drawing from its own library, which includes more than 2,000 European films from Studio Canal.

“Because of our relationship with Studio Canal and looking at our own library, we thought there was an opportunity to present discerning consumers with these acclaimed and influential films,” said Anne Parducci, executive vp marketing at Lionsgate. The new label launches June 3 with the release of Diva and The Red Violin, both from France.

While there is no mention of Blu-ray in the article, I am seriously crossing my fingers and hoping. Diva is definitely one of my favourite films of all time, and I would kill for this title on Blu-ray. I hope that the success of No Country for Old Men on Blu-ray will help Lionsgate realise that many of the early adopters of HD Media have a strong interest in art house style movies.
